The documentary, further off the straight and narrow, is my first time to study directly how television shapes and reflects attitudes and beliefs about gays and lesbians in the broader culture. Because the mainstream symbols of gay and lesbian culture are not widely recognizable in China. Chinese law has no direct discriminatory description of the LGBT community, but there is also no specific protection laws. For example, the gay-themed love movie “Call Me by Your Name” was quietly pulled back by the Beijing International Film Festival. In June last year, China’s General Administration of Radio, Film, and Television defined homosexuality as an “abnormal relationship” and prohibited homosexual content from appearing in film and television works.
